Test run of the tunnel boring machine (TBM) of the 9 km long Kvesheti-Kobi tunnel was successfully completed

Roads Department of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia continues the preparatory works for the construction of the Kvesheti-Kobi highway and the 9 km long tunnel.

The assembly and testing works of the TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) specially made for the construction of the 9 km long tunnel is already in the final phase.

The first test run of the machine was successfully completed during the testing process. Excavation of the 9 km long tunnel will start in September.

The TBM is one of the most high-tech tunneling machines in the world. The construction of the tunnel using this method significantly reduces the impact on the environment. In addition, the machine ensures the excavation of the tunnel and its concrete cladding simultaneously, which further increases the safety standard.

The implementation of this project will enable the continuous and safe movement in this direction at any time of the year. Currently, the existing road passes through a difficult geographical route that is unsafe due to heavy snowfall and avalanches in winter. The construction of a new highway and tunnel will finally solve the constant problem of transportation.

The tunnel, which will be built within the framework of the Kvesheti-Kobi road project, will be 9 kilometers long and 15 meters wide, and its analogue will not exist not only in Georgia, but also in the region.
